Walking
Arguably the best way to see, hear and smell Islay! There are lots of leaflets and guidebooks suggesting various walks of particular note or why not just discover and tailor your own family favourite. Obviously, please abide by the countryside code, dress appropriately (remember there is no bad weather, just wrong clothing!), wear footwear suitable for often boggy conditions and remember to shut gates, respect the flora and fauna and leave nothing but footprints!

Cycling
Miles upon miles of little lanes just waiting to be explored, amazing views at every turn and with the added bonus of lack of traffic, unless you count the wandering sheep, cows and deer! There is however also a dedicated cycle path linking the 3 distilleries on the South East coast from Port Ellen and another hopefully opening this year from Port Charlotte to Bruichladdich on The Rhinns. Not to worry if you can’t bring your own, Cycle Hire is available in different locations and if you fancy something a little different, why not try a ‘Fat Bike’ too!
Golf
Arguably one of the best courses and in one of the most scenic locations you are likely to find is the Championship links 18-hole golf course at the Machrie Hotel.

Mactaggart Leisure Centre
Situated on School Street in Bowmore, with a 25m x 4 lane swimming pool, sauna, activity room, fitness studio, sports shop, and launderette. Details of the opening times, and prices can be obtained at reception.

Kayaking

Boat Trips
Gus and his team provide a variety of boat trips and tours allowing visitors to view Islay’s amazing coast and it’s many interesting inhabitant’s including seals, porpoises and even rare Sea Otters and Sea Eagles, if you’re lucky! Alternatively, they also offer fishing and foraging tours too as well as trips to the famous Corryvrechan, the world’s third largest whirlpool off the coast of Jura.
